Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka has urged President Muhammadu Buhari not to present himself for re-election in 2019.
He discribed those campaigning for Buhari’s return to power in 2019 as sick.
Addressing journalist, at the Freedom Park, in Lagos, on Monday, Soyinka said it was sickening for some people to be canvassing for a second term in office for Buhari midway into his first tenure.
“My view right now is that Buhari needs to take a rest. I hope he doesn’t put himself up for Presidency in 2019. But that doesn’t mean that his programs and projects should take a rest,” he said.
Soyinka added “People can be very scornful by saying, is it anti-corruption we are going to eat? It is up to us to see that programmes like the anti-corruption fight is empowered especially at a time when people are launching books.”
The renowned playwright further stated that those who posit that what Nigeria needed was just a restructuring of the mind were not saying the obvious.
Soyinka argued that restructuring of the mind was what could be done on daily basis, but that what Nigeria presently needed was real restructuring which he called “reconfiguring”.
