Former President Shehu Shagari is alife and well, Personal Assistant and head of the Shehu Shagari Foundation, Dr. Atiku Nuhu Koko, said on Sunday.
Koko spoke against the background of rumors that Nigeria’s Second Republic president had passed on.
Several postings on the social media had speculated that Shagari was dead. Some reports had it that he was ill and had been flown to Germany where he eventually died on Sunday.
Koko told the Nigerian Tribune that “Alhaji Shagari is alive and well.” Shagari recently turned 90.
Shagari was president from October 1, 1979 to December 31, 1983. He ousted by Muhammad Buhari-led military junta, just three months into his second term. He has been living largely private live ever since then.
