After four years of lawmaking and supervising the works of the executive, where 591 bills were introduced out of which 123 bills were passed, the seventh Senate has officially come to an end.
The Nigerian Senate on Thursday in Abuja held a valedictory session to mark the end of the seventh Assembly, took a closer look at some of the defining moments in the Upper Chamber and probably set an agenda for the incoming Assembly.
Some prominent ex senators were on hand to witness the session. For most of the Senators, it was the last time they would be sitting in the chamber.
The Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, spoke on some of the achievements of the seventh assembly.
The floor was later thrown open as lawmakers reminisced on their experiences in the last four years and the lessons learnt.
Achievements notwithstanding, the upper chamber failed to enact some critical laws such as the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), which Nigerians expected them to pass. They were unable to find a fair ground in resolving the various bottle-necks surrounding the bill.
The senate also failed to expend the various investigations it initiated within the period as the expectations of many Nigerians who had looked up to them for relief were dashed.
No explanation had been given on why the reports were not considered, despite months of investigations.
