President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday evening met with former President Goodluck Jonathan, who return to Nigeria a few days ago after about two months abroad.
Jonathan was speculated to have gone into exile in the neighbouring West African country of Ivory Coast on fears that he could be arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over allegations of frauds under his administration.
Buhari and Jonathan met behind closed doors at the official residence of the President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
State house sources, who elected not to be named because they are not in position to speak for the government, disclosed to our correspondents that the held at about 9pm, and centred on the on the resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta being perpetrated by a group called the Niger Delta Avengers.
“It was a private meeting between the president and former president. The meeting dwelt largely on the increased violence in the Niger Delta which has cut down on the country’s oil production,”the source revealed.
Jonathan returned to Nigeria on Wednesday after a month’s trip to the United Kingdom and Côte d’Ivoire.
He arrived at the Port Harcourt International Airport before and immediately headed for his country home in Otuoke, Bayelsa State.
He left Otuoke for Abuja on Thursday to keep the appointment with the President.
Jonathan had on May 23 dismissed a report that he was on exile in Cote d’Ivoire.
The apprehension was rife that the former president could be arrested as many of the testimonies by the former officials of his administration who are facing investigations or trial have pointed to him.
It was not clear whether there was any mention of those cases during their meeting.
