Prof Yemi Osinbajo, vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said that he is primed to take over as the president if anything bad happens to General Muhammadu Buhari (GMB), the presidential flag bearer.
Some politicians in rival Peoples Democratic Party have fueled fears about buhari’s age and health conditions, alleging that the choice of the retired general was a plot to once again shortchange the North in the political equation.
Former President Umaru Yar’Adua died two years into his tenure leaving room for President Jonathan his then vice to complete the tenure and run for his own term.
Osinbajo in recent interview with Sahara Reporters, said he would take over but that he would ensure that fair process is followed.
“I think that I’m certainly prepared to serve the nation in whatever capacity I’m elected to, or find myself in and I think that one of the key things we are presenting to the nation is a set of policies not individual. Gen Buhari himself has made it clear that he is coming on a platform and this platform is a platform of change. We are looking at how to turn the direction of our country around.”
In case of the unlikely scenario that the president dies in office, what does he he think the North woul react this is what he said, “What would upset anyone is if for any reason there is some unfairness or injustice in the way that anyone were to emerge whether it is by election or by succession. Nigerians are very fair minded people and what they would like to see is a measure of justice, a measure of fairness and a level playing field. That is what will condition response whatever that response will be.”
Osinbajo was propped for the vice-presidential flagbearer by Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, who has grown to become the greatest power broker in the APC.
The deputy flagbearer of the party hinges a lot of what they would achieve if elected into office on their ability to block leakages in the system as they would mount massive anti-corruption initiatives.
But many Nigerians perceive his political Godfather Tinubu as part of the very system they vow to clean up, raising questions whether their avowals would not atrophy in the field of political reality.
