For the Peoples Democratic Party, it is not only raining but also flooding as the party which has just been defeated in the general elections are headed for another round of crisis.
Niger State Governor, Babangida Muazu Aliyu, on Saturday gave said it was unfortunate that the leadership of the party, which led it to a disastrous outing in the elections, were not willing to resign. “It is unfortunate that people had to be called to resign. The leaders are supposed to voluntarily resign their positions for the loss at the just concluded general elections,” he said.
Aliyu, who spoke in Dutse, Jigawa State capital on Saturday, said the leadership were rather threatening to form a new faction if they are compelled to resign.
“It is unfair that they are threatening to form a factional PDP because they were asked to resign” Aliyu said.
Governor Aliyu made these remarks during the inauguration of a township road which Jigawa state Governor Sule Lamido had named after ‘G7 Governors’ .
PDP national chairman, Mr Adamu Muazu and the National Working Committee NWC members have come under heavy criticisms following the loss of the presidential election by the party’s candidate,President Goodluck Jonathan to General Muhammadu Buhari of APC.
But they in turn had tried to shift the blame back President Goodluck Jonathan, whom they said, relied on the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation to prosecute the campaign.
They insist that they have a clear two-year mandate which expires in 2016, and that they are not ready relinquish until it runs through.
Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayosi has been unequivocal in his call for the party leadership to quit, and he appears to enjoy the support of an overwhelming majority of the party members.
Pundits believe that the party leaders ought to quit to give room for fresh people that can recreate the party and give it a new sense of direction.
Some believe that Muázu and his acolytes are moles bent on giving death blow to already troubled PDP.
PDP has setup a committee to evaluate what led to its abysmal performance in the polls and recommend way forward. the committee is headed by Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu.
Any hope that the PDP has ended the trauma was blown away Saturday when Governor Aliyu openly lamented the failure of the PDP leadership to resign just as he hinted at the plan by Muazu and others to form a parallel faction of PDP.
Fayose had reiterated his call on Muazu ,others to resign after leaders of British Labour and Lib-Dem parties voluntarily relinquished their posts after losing to the Conservative Prty in the UK general elections of May 7.
