Despite its huge followership, the All Progressives Congress (APC) may lose the Kano governorship election in 2015 if its party leaders impose an unpopular candidate in the election. Deputy minority leader of the House of Representatives, Hon Kawu Sumaila, has said.
Kawu, who is a frontline gubernatorial aspirant of the APC, spoke yesterday in Kano when he inaugurated a committee of delegates ahead of the primary election scheduled for December 4.
The lawmaker told a mammoth crowd of his supporters at the occasion that APC, which was formed to bring about the much- needed political and leadership change in Nigeria cannot afford to toe the path of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) by imposing unpopular candidates in the general election.
“The entire world is witnessing political change as a result of prolonged injustice at all levels, our party leaders must, as a matter of necessity, provide level playing field for all aspirants so that the peoples’ will is manifested in the coming primary election,” he said.
He maintained that if the APC goes ahead to impose unpopular governorship candidate, Kano people, “Who are known for playing classic politics, will surely reject it in the general election.”
“We should not be too quick to forget what happened to us in the defunct All Nigeria’s People’s Party in 2011 when former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau hand-picked his anointed candidate who was eventually defeated at the polls”, Kawu said.
