Enugu residents on Wednesday went into a wide jubilation following the appearance of Spiritual director of Adoration Ministry, Enugu Nigeria (AMEN), Rev Father Ejike Mbaka.
Thousands of the residents who had been riled by the unconfirmed report that the revered cleric had been picked up by security agents immediate went into celebration.
In a live video update on Wednesday afternoon by BBC Pidgin, Mbaka was seen in an open roof car waving to protesters who surrounded him alongside operatives of the Nigeria Police Force.
Catholic youths had earlier besieged residence of Bishop Callistus Onaga and held him hostage following an unconfirmed reports that the popular cleric had been arrested by the operatives of Department of State Services.
Mbaka has been in the news following his call for the resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari over deteriorating security conditions in the country.
A crowd of Adoration faithful had besieged the Bishop’s court requesting for whereabouts Mbaka who was allegedly arrested by security agents Tuesday.
The attack on Bishop’s Court followed unconfirmed report that the security agents first visited Bishop Onaga who called Mbaka on the phone and handed him over.
According to an online news outlet, Everydaynewsngr, the concern over the whereabouts of Mbaka was first raised by an arm of the Ohanaeze in a statement that was distributed to the media in Enugu.
According to the report, Catholic faithful who had arrived for the Wednesday ‘E no dey’ programme were shocked by Mbaka’s absence leading to a protest to the Bishop’s residence.
Parts of the bishop’s house were destroyed by the protesters who demanded for Mbaka.
A report by PUNCH credits the DSS SA saying that the Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry Enugu Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, is not in its custody.
Spokesperson for DSS, Peter Afunnaya, made this known in a text message sent to The PUNCH on Wednesday.
“He (Mbaka) is not with the DSS, please,” Afunnaya wrote in response to an inquiry by our correspondent.
When officials of the Diocese of Enugu, to which Fr. Mbaka belongs, were contacted, some of them said he was not missing while others said they cannot confirm his whereabouts.
