amie Carragher believes Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho needs to follow the lead of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp as he attempts to find a consistent winning formula at Old Trafford.
Speaking to Yahoo Sport at an event to promote Sky Sports’ packed month of festive football, the Anfield legend has suggested Mourinho’s negative and often agitated demeanour in press conferences and during matches is not helping his stuttering United team.
The United boss has been dismissed from the touchline on two occasions so far this season and was also fined by the Football Association for inflammatory comments towards a match official prior to his side’s game at Liverpool in October.
Meanwhile, Klopp’s energy is all positive around a Liverpool team that headed into this weekend’s Premier League fixtures nine points ahead of their great rivals, with Carragher suspecting Mourinho needs to change his attitude as much as his tactics.
“Mourinho is being emotional on the side of the pitch, but probably not in a positive way and then everything feels so different with Klopp,” Carragher told Yahoo Sport UK.
“When I look at Mourinho over the last year, he just looks like he gets angry very quickly and I wonder whether the players in his team are looking at him and wondering what he is up to.
“From what I can see looking in from the outside, Mourinho has taken his Chelsea problems into the Manchester United job and it should be like that.
“This should be a fresh start for him, a renewed Jose, but all the grievances he had with referees and the FA are rumbling on in a new job now.
“It must be hard for him to come to terms with not winning every week. If you remember how successful this manager has been throughout his career and over the last 12 months, he has been struggling to win games.
“He is probably scratching his head and asking why his methods are not working any more. He just looks like he is getting angry.”
Meanwhile, Klopp shows his emotion and people are responding to it in a positive manner. It highlights the difference between the two men.
“At this moment in time, Klopp’s emotions are getting the right reaction out of his players and the Liverpool supporters and Mourinho’s antics are having the opposite affect at United.”
Klopp’s likability factor was strengthened by his impressive appearance alongside Carragher as a pundit on Sky’s Monday Night Football earlier this year, with the former defender admitting he would loved to have played under the German.
“The hour we had with him when he came into the Sky studios confirmed what we all thought we knew about him,” added 2005 Champions League winner Carragher.
“He is great to be around and is an inspirational figure. I would loved to have played under him because I’m sure he would get the best out of any player he comes across.
“There are no airs and graces with Klopp. He doesn’t change for anyone and I can’t see any other manager in world football fitting into Liverpool like he does.
“His personality is just what Liverpool people like and that is why it has worked so well for him so far.
“You think of the lift his presence has given the crowd at Anfield, where the atmosphere has been amazing in recent weeks.
“If he is having that effect on the fans, imagine what he is doing for the players working with him every day.”
