The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on has begun the process of migrating from manual to electronic voting as the country continues to search for a reliable and less-fraudulent voting system.
Nigerian elections are fraught with all manners of fraud, including ballot-snatching, multiple and underage votings, and swapping of scores, among others.
INNEC on Monday started the demonstration of the use of electronic voting and the collation of results in Nigeria.
The Commission held the demonstration at its headquarters in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
The National Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said that the the commission by the measure is taking another decisive step towards the full automation of the electoral process.
Yakubu said the commission had invited 40 manufacturers of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) around the world to practically demonstrate how the machines could work, preparatory to full migration.
According to him, over 40 electronic voting machine vendors have expressed interest in providing the technology required for e-Voting in Nigeria.
Yakubu said due to the deployment of the election technology, the commission can now upload real-time, election results for public view.
He said that commission used this technology during the Edo State governorship election, where election results were uploaded in the portal: www inecelectionresults.com
The INEC boss described the planned demonstration of the use of EVMs as a giant step in the commission’s continuous effort to deepen electoral integrity in Nigeria through the deployment of technology.
He said that what the commission was doing is building on critical pillars of the process as the biometric register of voters had been updated continuously.
