The Inspector-General of Police, Ag IGP Solomon E. Arase, has promised tough actions against police men and women who engage in bribery and corruption.
Towards the end,Arase has directed the IGP Teams on Monitoring of Police Performance to immediately commence the monitoring of activities,conducts of police officers on the highways, police stations and formations nationwide.
The IGP, according to a statement by Force Spokesman Emmanuel Ojukwu on Friday, expressed his resolve to rid the Force of all forms of corruption and warns officers and men to desist from corrupt practices.
He further urged officers and men of the Force to be mindful of the constitutional rights of the citizenry, while performing their statutory duties, warning against excessive use of force and unjustifiable application of lethal weapons contrary to standing rules of engagement, as the Force will not hesitate to punish indicted officers.
In addition, the IGP, on behalf of the Police High Command, commended the general public for their understanding, cooperation and support for the Force in the face of the current security challenges.
He reminds members of the public that they are key actors in the task of policing Nigeria and should continue to actively collaborate with the Force in exposing societal ills, including ills within the Force.
Police is perceived as one of the most corrupt organisations in the country. in the past, police authories hd designed measures to monitor and discipline corrupt police officers.
There used to be a special group called the X-Squad which was specially designated to enforce compliance of members of the force to transparency rules, but for some years that internal measure has been relaxed.
