THE Federal Government has reportedly waded into the crisis rocking the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and has ordered the Chris Giwa-led executive board to step aside in order to avert the looming ban by world football governing body FIFA.
Sources at the NFF Glass House secretariat in Abuja told Tribunesport on Saturday that the order stopping Giwa from parading himself as the NFF president was issued in the early hours of Saturday.
It was gathered that with the directive from the Federal Government which came barely 48 hours to the expiration of the FIFA deadline, all the relevant security agencies have been informed to ensure that the directive is obeyed to the letter.
According to Tribunesport source, “I can confirm to you that the announcement will be made public later today (yesterday) after the Super Eagles’ game against the Congo, or early on Sunday (today).”
The House of Representatives Committee on Sports had given an indication of what will happen when the chairman, Honourable Godfrey Gaiya, met with stakeholders last week in Abuja and directed Alhaji Aminu Maigari to hold a congress that would lead to a proper election.
The move had led to a pronouncement by Giwa that it was only the Court of Arbitration for sport, that could remove him from ‘office’.
Meanwhile, Giwa was turned back at the UJ Esuene Stadium, Calabar on Saturday by security agents when he made to join the Cross River State governor Senator Liyel Imoke, to the pitch for the traditional exchange of formalities with the players of the Super Eagles and the Red Devils of the Republic of the Congo.
