The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested immediate past Jigawa Governor, Sule Lamido along with his two sons over graft allegations.
According to a report by Vanguard, the former governor and his two sons- Aminu and Mustapha-were picked up in Abuja on Tuesday and taken to Kano where they are expected to be arraigned on Wednesday (today) before the Federal High Court there.
The newspaper quotes source in EFCC as saying that the governor and his sons would be charged with a-24-count charge bordering on money laundering and related offences.
The commission claims Lamido used his sons to transfer state funds into companies in which they had interest and also received kickback to the tune of N1.3 billion from a local road building company.
EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed the arrest and movement of the Lamido and sons to Kano but did not say why they were moved to Kano and not Jigawa where the alleged offence took place.
Two weeks ago Lamido had to cut short his overseas vacation to honour EFCC invitation over the same case.
He had reported to the EFCC agents who questioned him on what he knew about the alleged fraud carried out while in office.
The former governor wa said to have denied allegations he pilfered state funds and was granted administrative bail by the anti-graft agency.
A source close to the former governor confirmed to Vanguard last night that Lamido had assembled his legal team to defend him.
Lamido’s son was arrested and questioned by the anti-graft agency in 2014 when Lamido was still governor of Jigawa State. The arrest was given political interpretation in some quarters where it was seen as Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s way of getting at the governor his opposition to Jonathan’s re-election bid.
