The Divisional Police Officer (names withheld) attached to Magama local government area of Niger State has been accused of snatching four ballot boxes and papers at Mungoro Central Polling unit of Majin ward.
Lnewsdisry Online report that voters at the Polling Unit alleged that the DPO stormed the polling unit when voting was in progress, tear gassing both the INEC officials and electorate who were on queue.
Citing Barrister Ibrahim Rege, the online portal further reported that the DPO took away ballot boxes that were already thumb printed along with those that have not been thumb printed.
According to Rege, “The entire voting process has been on course peacefully. Accreditation was peacefully carried out and voters were orderly on queue to cast their votes when the DPO stormed the polling unit ,tear gassed both INEC officials and the people before carting away the ballot boxes with the already thumb printed and virgin ballot papers”.
However, when contacted on phone, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Emmanuel Amore said the accusation was false as the DPO did not snatch the box but he helped rescue INEC officials and materials from hoodlums.
“It is not true, my DPO only protected the INEC officials and their materials from some hoodlums. They will only be making allegations when they were not allowed to carry out their nefarious activity.
“Go and ask INEC if any of their material is missing. My DPO only helped to protect INEC officials and materials”.
