Growing frustrated by Chelsea’s quiet summer? According to the gossip making its way through the papers today, you’re not alone. So far, the Blues have managed to sell Petr Cech to Arsenal and replace the departing remains of Didier Drogba with the incoming remains of Radamel Falcao, and while we’re expecting Asmir Begovic to arrive anytime now, the club has done little more than tread water since securing its first Premier League title in five years.
Considering the pathetic showing in Europe last season, we probably need to do more than hop around in place snickering at Manchester City. And apparently Jose Mourinho agrees* — the Telegraph say that the Sun (this is a weird way to circumvent paywalls, but bear with me) are reporting that the manager “is pleading with the club’s board to back him with funds to make more big-name signings before the end of the transfer window.” That line, of course, doesn’t mean much of anything, but it probably taps into the zeitgeist of the window to date better than any of the actual rumours surrounding the club so far.
*He’s probably still quite miffed about the Cech thing, too.
We need to get better, and we’re watching other clubs — even Barcelona, who were astonishing last season — reinforce. If you’re not a little bit concerned with how the summer’s gone so far, you’re a calmer person than I. And, apparently, than Mourinho. SB Nation
