7 police officers, 3 soldiers among dead, according to local media
At least 15 people were killed Friday in an attack by the Boko Haram terror group on a convoy of a state governor.
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum was on his way to Baga, where he was expected to receive returning IDPs, when his convoy was ambushed. according to a Channels TV report..
Anadolu agency website citing a correspondent of a local media reports however that the governor was going there to meet residents displaced by the terror group.
According to agency, the said he survived the attack in the Baga region without injuries.
Deaths included seven police officers, three soldiers and an unknown number injured.
According to the Channels TV report, an Armoured Personnel Carrier belonging to the police as well as state government vehicles were reportedly hijacked in the attack.
Governor Zulum was said to have flown in an Airforce chopper to Baga earlier on Friday, where he performed the Friday prayers with troops.
The governor was expected to receive about three thousand civilians who will be transported from IDP camps both in Maiduguri and Monguno on Saturday.
The attack on Friday is the second of its kind, stirring great concern.
Earlier in July, Zulum’s convoy narrowly escaped a terror attack in Baga town.
About 3 million people have been displaced in more than a decade of terror activities by Boko Haram. Scores of civilians are still trapped in remote communities unable to flee because of insecurity on the roads.
The violence, which has killed more than 30,000 people, has spread to neighboring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, prompting a military response.
Borno state is the epicenter of the insurgency.
