A herd of 65 cattle and a herdsman have been arrested by Amotekun corps on allegations of farmland destruction.
Farmers said the herd destroyed maize, cassava and yam crops on their farmland, valued at more than N5.6 million.
Adamu Yusuf and his herd were arrested Thursday morning after farmers in Odoripo community of Odo town, on the outskirts of Akure, lodged complaints.
Sources said the herd and herdsman were arrested in a raid between 10pm and 3am and taken to Amotekun headquarters in Alagbaka.
They were later released after paying N500,000.
The Commander Ondo security agency Amotekun, Adeleye Olatunji who later spoke with leaders of Cattle Breeder Association warned the herdsmen to stop destroying farms in the state.
“If you continue to disturb farmers and their farms there will be famine. This is because there will be no food for people to eat. This is why we are asking you to talk to your men not to destroy people’s farm land.
Abubakar Audu, chairman on Miyetti Allah in Ekiti, said he appreciated efforts for amicable resolution.
“We have had a meeting in the south West telling our herdsmen not to perpetrate any havoc and we will keep talking to them and disciplinary action must be taken,” Audu said. (Daily Trust)
