The Peoples Democratic Party has raised a powerful team to oversee the re-election bid of Governor Godwin Obaseki.
appointed Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State as Chairman of the National Campaign Council for the Edo State governorship election, an indication of intent of the party to ensure it retained its newly gained position in the state.
The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan, confirmed this via a tweet on party’s official Twitter handle on Friday.
@OfficialPDPNig NWC appoints @GovWike as Edo State governorship election National Campaign Council Chairman.
“The deputy chairman is Adamawa State governor, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Fintiri,” he further disclosed via the tweet.
Incumbent governor of Edo, Godwin Obaseki, who decamped to the party a fortnight ago, will be flying the PDP flag during the election scheduled for September 19.
Wike’s choice may be informed by his uneqeualed experience in fighting and winning political battles in a turbulent environment like Rivers State, even in the face of massive federal might.
Meanwhile, the party , in another statement by Ologbondiyan on Friday, said said the people of Edo State have are all behind the incumbent for the September 19 polls.
He said that his position was borne out of the fact the opposition party the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, have continued to affirm the sterling qualities of Gov. Obaseki on his 63rd birthday anniversary.
According to the statement, “Our party also notes that Ize-Iyamu’s message came at the time Governor Obaseki was also receiving massive outpouring of solidarity messages from the people of Edo State, including APC leaders, who called to express their support for the PDP candidate.
“PDP appreciates Ize-Iyamu’s excellent description of the character traits of Obaseki, stressing that in line with his message, Governor Obaseki, has in the last four years, concentrated on unifying the state, dousing political tension and remaining completely focused on developing the state, which is the reason the people of Edo have collectively settled for his re-election.
“Moreover, even APC leaders, including the former National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole, had also testified to Governor Obaseki’s qualities including his testimony that ‘Obaseki had been part of the tradition; he knows the vision, he knows the mission, he knows the target, he knows the challenges and he knows how to overcome them.”
