The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has blamed the increase in
cases of accidents on Kano-Maiduguri road on the contractor handling its
dualisation.
The acting Sector Commander of the commission in Kano state, Mr Kabiru
Nadabo, made the remark in an interview in Kano on Tuesday.
Nadabo attributed the rate of accidents to refusal of the contractor to
heed to the directive of the commission that only one lane of the road
should be opened to motorists.
`’The contractor is the one to blame for opening the two lanes instead
of one.
“’Dantata & Sawoe is the contractor handling the dualisation of the
road. For over two years now it has refused to listen to our advice to
open only one lane.
“It is one of the roads, which records the highest number of accidents
in the state now,” he said.
Nadabo, who is FRSC’s Head of Operations, said that the commission had
summoned the contractor to a meeting as part of measures to ensure that
it complied with its earlier directive to it to open only one lane while
working on the other.
“’We have written to the contractor to come for a meeting on Sept. 9 in
order to finally resolve the issue,” he said.
According to him, though the contract was awarded by the Federal
Government, we don’t have to wait for somebody to come from Abuja to
tell the contractor what to do.
He also said that impatience of drivers had continued to cause accidents
around Hotoro, Gano and Wudil towns on the road, with the attendant loss
of many lives and property on a daily basis.
“It is time to prevail on the contractor to see reason and the
imperative of ensuring the safety of lives of members of the public by
opening only one lane to allow free flow of traffic,” he said
