Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates’ Court on Monday sentenced two men — Samuel Tsavetim, and Timothy Bunter — both aged 24 years, to two years’ imprisonment each for stealing items worth N1.75 million.
The Senior Magistrate, Mr Aminu Eri, said that the sentence was without an option of fine.
“The sentence would serve as a punishment to the convicts and a deterrent to other intending criminals.
“The rate of stealing in the FCT is increasing at an alarming rate as young and able people have taken to this act and so this sentence will deter others from committing such crimes,’’ Eri said.
Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Cpl. Monday Akor said that on May 19, Sylvester Clement of Stream Street, Mararaba, Nasarawa State, reported the accused persons at the Maitama Police Station, Abuja.
Akor said Clement reported that when he got to his site located on Plot 628, Raal Street, Maitama, he discovered that some items were missing.
He told the court that Bunter, who was a security guard at the site, connived with Tsavetim, a former staff of Clement to steal the items from the site.
He said the stolen items included Iron rods valued N480,000, 65 bags of cement worth N130,000, one Tiger Generator put at N65,000, one window unit AC valued N50,000 and one Samsung Fridge worth N380,000.
He said that during police investigation, the convicts admitted committing the crime and confessed to sharing the proceeds from the sale of the items.
They both pleaded guilty to the offence.
Tsaventim, in his plea, told the court that hunger drove him to commit the crime while Bunter begged for forgiveness and promised not to be lured to such a crime again
