The All Progressives Congress (APC) has welcomed the decision of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, to join the party, describing Tambwual as ‘a big fish’ for the party.
After Tambuwal’s defection announcement on Tuesday, the National Chairman of the APC, John Oyegun told Channels Television that the addition was an absolutely wonderful and delightful one.
“It is Absolutely big fish, absolutely delightful and sensational.
“Today we count among our fold the number four citizen of this great nation and we have only three to go. It can’t be truly better,” a delighted Oyegun said.
“I want to welcome Honourable Aminu Tambuwal to the fold of the APC.”
Mr Oyegun pointed out that Tambuwal’s body language had been clear that he was not feeling at home where he was, emphasising that “he can now feel at home”having joined the opposition APC.
“He Will Not Be Impeached”
The PDP had taken some APC members in the House of Representatives to court for defected last year from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, insisting that they should vacate the seat, which they won as members of the PDP.
There are also indications that the PDP could approach the court to secure an order to force Tambuwal out of the Speaker position.
But Mr Oyegun said that he did not envisage any litigation as a result of Tambuwal’s defection from the PDP to the APC.
“The defection will not bring litigations against him.
“We do not even have time for litigation. By the time the House comes back from recess on December 2, it will be just a month to the elections.
“It is a decided issue. If you remember the Atiku-Obasanjo case, the Supreme court decided that Atiku was not in breach of the law when he left the PDP as the Vice President,” he said, insisting that “whatever the situation is, anybody can move from one party to the other”.
According to the APC leader, what is even more important is that it is clear that the PDP is in a state of crisis nationwide.
He also ruled out the possibility of the House members reconvening to impeach the speaker before the December date, explaining that the PDP had not watered the fabric of the legislature to that extent.
Mr Oyegun said the lawmakers would be decent enough to maintain their ranks.
“Even if they try, they won’t get away with it anyway. I presume that with the antecedent of Tambuwal… He was not their preferred candidate. He became speaker on the strength of his personality and character and was able to combine almost the totality of the opposition with a substantial chunk of the PDP in the House,” he said, emphasising that the Speaker commands the personal respect of the members of the House.
“I have no doubt he will not be impeached,” he added.
