Ekwueme had earlier in the weekend collapsed in his Enugu home and was admitted to a hospital.
Some reports even indicated that the number two man in the Second Republic was in critical condition, with a few suggesting he was in a coma.
According to reports, the president’s approval followed a brief the president received Friday on the medical condition of the former Vice-President.
It was learnt that the approval covers the immediate charter of an Air Ambulance for the emergency movement and the cost of treatment.
Senior Special Assistant to the President(Media), Garba Shehu, in a statement, said that President Buhari prays that God will grant the elder statesman speedy recovery.
Ekwueme was reported to have collapsed and gone into coma on Sunday at his residence in Enugu after which he was admitted at the intensive care unit of Memfys Hospital in the state.
A spokesman for Ekwueme family Mr Laz Ekwueme had on Thursday, announced that the VP had become stable but was still under medical attention.
The statement issued by Laz Ekwueme on behalf of the family reads in part:
“Dr. Alex I. Ekwueme, GCON, the former Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, was on Sunday 29th October 2017, admitted into hospital for a chest infection…
“It will be recalled that the former Vice President had a quiet celebration of his 85th birthday on the 21st of October 2017 in the company of his family members and he remained in high spirits up till his recent health challenges.
“His doctors confirm that he is stable, but he will remain under close medical attention in the meantime.
“The family would like to express its profound gratitude to all Nigerians who have shown concern over this development and requests their sustained support and prayers as he continues to make a full recovery.”
