The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) has said that it will appeal the bail and five million naira compensation an Abuja High Court granted to Abiodun Agbele, an aide to Gov. Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti.
This is contained in a statement issued by Mr Wilson Uwujaren, the commission’s Head of Media and Publicity in Abuja on Thursday.
Uwujaren described Justice Olukayode Adeniyi’s ruling granting bail to Agbele and ordering EFCC to pay him N5 million compensation for unlawful detention as “shocking”.
He said that the ruling was “curious” against the background of the information presented to the court, which included the fact that the suspect is being held with valid remand warrants issued by competent courts.
The EFCC, however, said that it would file a motion for a stay of execution of the ruling, pending the determination of its appeal.
Adeniyi had held that “the wrongful and illegal detention” of the suspect without being charged to court is a “gross violation of his human right”
Agbele, who challenged the breach of fundamental human right and claimed N500 million as damages, is standing trial for alleged N1.2 billion money laundering from the Offiice of National Security Adviser.
