President Muhammadu Buhari and vice-president Yemi Osinbajo have cut their salaries by 50 per cent to set the the tune for other public office holders.
By this development, the Nigeran two top citizens will only receive 50% of the salaries paid to their predecessor.
Mallam Garba Shehu, senior special assistant to the president(media & publicity), in a statement on Friday, said the President’s decision to take a 50% pay cut was conveyed to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Friday by the Permanent Secretary of the State House, Mr. Nebolisa Emodi.
“I write to forward the completed IPPIS registration form of Mr. President and to draw your kind attention to Mr. President’s directive that only 50% of his salary be paid to him,” Mr. Emodi wrote in the letter with reference number PRES/81/SGF/17.
While the current annual remuneration of the President of Nigeria as published by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission is N14,058,820.00 (about N14 milion), Buhari will now receive N7, 29,410.00 annually, which is about N7 million.
The decision by Buhari to cut his salary by half was conveyed to the office of the Secretary to government of the federation (SGF) by the permanent secretary of the State House, Mr. Nebolisa Emodi on Thursday.
This was the outcome of the meeting the president had with the perm sec who briefed him about the state of affairs of the State House on Wednesday.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has similarly given up half of his official remuneration.
