The convener of the peace intimidating in Ekiti State under the aegis of Ekiti Elders has reacted to the claims of Adewale Omirin that he and his group are being set up for arrest through the peace meeting.
Babalola dismissed the claim and reminded Omiron of the assurances of the police and SSS.
Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, the 19 All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers and seven Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers are scheduled to to Thursday to resolve the raging impeachment crisis rocking the state.
The meeting is at the instance of the state’s elders led by an eminent lawyer and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Chief Afe Babalola.
The peace meeting is scheduled to hold at ABUAD and will bring the warring factions together in a face-to-face interactive session for the first time since the crisis erupted last November.
Fayose, in a statement he signed on Tuesday in Ado-Ekiti, has pledged his readiness to be committed to peace moves.
The governor said he was committed to the peace move to end the crisis and restore the state to the path of peace, prosperity and development.
He said the peace of Ekiti State is far above all interests and therefore everyone should support the elders’ peace efforts.
Babalola in a note to Omirin urged him to have a rethink and come to the meeting to which he (Babalola) had invited imminent Ekiti people.
Babalola’s note to Omirin, which was emailed to The Rainbow, reads:
I have just read message sent to SSS by you to the effect that you
heard that Governor Ayodele Fayose and his people are celebrating and
that you and your people would be arrested even before getting to me
tomorrow for the peace meeting. Consequently, you advised your people
to cancel the meeting.
Incidentally, the text message came when I was holding a meeting with
the Commissioner of Police who had come all the way from Abuja to
ensure that the peace meeting runs successfully.
The Commissioner of Police and
the SSS assured you in clear and unambigous term that such allegation
is not only untrue
but totally unfounded.
They even assured that they have put in place over 200 police men to
accompany you and your men to and fro Ado Ekiti.
They also assured you that the power of arrest rests solely with the
police and that they undertake not to arrest you.
I have also undertaken to accompany the police to see you off the
state after the meeting.
I still hope that you would have a rethink and come for the peace
meeting to which I have invited eminent Ekiti citizens from far and
wide.
