The Federal Government has announced the arrest of the leader of the Indegeniuos People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, at a joint press briefing on with the State Security Service in Abuja said that Kanu was arrested and brought back to Nigeria on Sunday.
According to him, the arrest followed a collaborative effort between security agencies in Nigeria and the Interpol.
He said that Kanu would be taken before the Federal High Court in Abuja for continuation of his trial on charges bordering on terrorism, treasonable felony, unlawful possession of firearms and management of an unlawful society.
Kanu and his co-defendant are facing treasonable felony charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Mr Kanu fled the country in September 2017 after an invasion of his home by the military in Afara-Ukwu, near Umuahia, Abia State.
The Federal Government had on September 20, 2017 obtained the leave of court to designate IPOB a terrorist group and to proscribe it.
Kanu had until his arrest maintained leadership of the IPOB from his London home, with the activities of the group escalating through its security arm named Eastern Security Network, which the group said was formed to provide security to the people of the Southeast especially against the background of increased violent attacks by Fulani herdsmen.
