The Enugu State command of the Nigeria Police has confirmed Four policemen were killed on Tuesday when unknown yet-to-be identified gunmen launched an attack on Iwollo Police Division.
There has been rising cases of attacks on police stations by unknown gunmen across the Southeast and South South, which President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed to bring to an end soon.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Police Command, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, said the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Ndatsu Aliyu, hadvisited the division together with his management team and Operational/Tactical Commanders, for on-the-spot assessment.
The attackers were said to have stormed the station in their numbers and opened fire on police operatives on duty.
According to the PPPRO, the officers responded g “gallantly” to the attack.
He said that mand several of the assailants escaped with bullet injuries.
He however confirmed that four of the operatives died from gunshot wounds sustained during the attack.
They were confirmed dead in the hospital.
Ndukwe further disclosed that part of the station was set ablaze by the assailants, who were said to have carted guns belonging felled policemen.
Ndukwe further said that Enugu State Commissioner Mohammed Ndatsu Aliyu had ordered discreet investigation to fish out the assailants and their cohorts.
He also appealed to law-abiding residents of the state to volunteer useful information that could assist the command in the ongoing investigation, and to promptly report to the police any person(s) found with gunshot injuries
