Atmosphere of chaos pervades in Owerri, Imo State capital as gunmen in the early hours of Monday attacked the correctional center and police department in the city.
It was learnt that the correctional facility and police investigations department in Owerri in Imo State, southeast Nigeria, were set on fire by the yet-to-identified attackers in the operation.
A report by Vanguard cites an eyewitness as saying, “The operation started at about 1 am and till 3 am. These men are heavily sophisticated.
“They came drove in their security vehicle at first we thought they are Army and police, with the way they started and before you know they started shooting everywhere and went straight to the prison.”
Figures between 1500 and 3000 are being bandied about in the media as the number of inmates that escaped from the correctional facility.
