Xenophobic attacks: 640 Nigerians register to return home, as 89 Nigerians die in two years

As at Monday, no less than 640 Nigerians living in South Africa have registered to return home following the attacks against them in the country.
This was as reports revealed that 89 Nigerians lost their lives in the past two years in South Africa.
According to a reports, the federal government has rescheduled the return of Nigerians to begin Wednesday to allow those whose travelling documents have expired to renew them.
The Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who in a statement revealed the number of those who have registered to come back, said that Air Peace would transport them in two operations.
Meanwhile, reports have it that 89 Nigerians living in South Africa lost their lives between December 2017 and September 2019.
A report filed by Thisday Newspaper quoted sources saying 39 Nigerians were killed by their compatriots over drug related issues.
Officials of South Africa were said to have admitted that 19 deaths were as a result of police brutality while the rest was as a result of other causes.
It was also gathered that about 400,000 Nigerians are currently living in South Africa with 10,860 in prison.
Authorities said 60 percent of those in jail was as a result of crimes that have to do with drugs.
However, authorities also clarified that there are other genuine Nigerians like professionals working in the field of medicine, pharmacy, businessmen and genuine traders.
The authorities said the few drug couriers were the ones damaging the image of Nigerians in South Africa.
