Minister of State for Education, Barrister Nyesom Wike has declared that only the Rivers people will decide who the governor would be, saying the tricks outgoing governor Amaechi would not change anything.
This is as he told Rivers people on Monday that the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), would have the luxury of choosing the candidate it wants to contest the next year’s governorship election.
Speaking in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, when the people of Apara kingdom visited him at his William Jumbo residence, Wike assured the crowd that PDP was united and stronger than ever before, adding that members of the party were working as a team to take over Rivers State.
The minister accused the government of All Progressives Congress (APC) of playing politics with the welfare of the people, stating that the government of Rotimi Amaechi was selective in the distribution of infrastructural development in the state.
He took a swipe at the governor whom he said would “dip hand into his pocket and give out money for a project without due process. We must vote the APC government out in 2015. The only way we can reply these people for all the abuses they have been heaping on the President and his wife is for us to vote them out,” Wike said.
“I have said it before and I want to say it again that nobody can intimidate me. PDP leaders know who they will decide to contest. And I know who they will choose. What you need to do is to vote President Jonathan because when he wins, we will win Rivers State,” he told the people.
Speaking earlier, the Prime Minister and Chairman, Council of Chiefs of Apara Kingdom, Chike Worlu, called on the minister to resign from the federal cabinet and declare for the governorship election, assuring that the entire Apara kingdom was behind him.
“Rivers people are not ashamed to have a son like you. We need a courageous person for the battle ahead and we have seen that you are very courageous. That is why we have come to urge you to declare your interest now.
“You are qualified to occupy the office of the governor of Rivers State. That is why we have decorated you today for the battle ahead,” the monarch said.
Also speaking, Worgu Chukwumarti, described Wike as a man that has collapsed the dichotomy system in Rivers State politics.
“You have successfully destroyed ethnic political bigotry in the state. That is why we are urging you not to delay any more but come out and contest,” he told Wike.
