BENIN—HENRY, the thirty-one years old nephew of a senatorial aspirant of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Edo South senatorial district, Mr. Ehiogie West-Idahosa and his police orderly, were shot dead by suspected armed robbers in Benin yesterday, heightening the tension in the state.
The deceased, Vanguard was informed, was the only son of his mother.
It was learned that he just returned from the United Kingdom, UK, where he had concluded a Masters programme, while the deceased police orderly was attached to the Special Protection Unit.
Vanguard learned that they were trailed from a bank, from where they withdrew money, at 2p.m.
On getting close to the residence of the aspirant on Ogiugo Street in GRA, the robbers opened fire on occupants of the vehicle and escaped with the money.
Vanguard learned that the robbers, about five, rained bullets on the vehicle and the two occupants died before help could reach them.
Edo State Police Commissioner, Mr. Foluso Adebanjo, who visited the scene of the incident, vowed that the police will apprehend the perpetrators.
He said it was a robbery incident, but that a crack team of detectives had been detailed to investigate the matter.
Efforts to reach Mr. West-Idahosa proved abortive as he was said to be in shock at press time.
The former House of Representatives member is battling for the senatorial ticket of the party with the former Publicity Secretary of PDP, Mr. Matthew Urhoghide; former Oredo Local Government Area Chairman, Mr. Victor Ebomoyi, and the former Chief of Staff to the governor, Mr. Isaiah Osifo.
