Arsene Wenger has once again refuted the idea that he is afraid to spend Arsenal‘s money in the transfer market and said he could very well spend big money during the upcoming January transfer window, if the deals are right.
Speaking to the press ahead of Sunday’s clash with Liverpool, Wenger explained why he was hesitant to spend big on player transfers in recent years, putting much of the blame on the club’s financial situation after opening a new stadium in 2006, and why that is no longer the case as another January window creeps ever closer.
“There were periods when we did not have the money. What I don’t like is to spend money that I do not have.
“Now I have money so there is no problem spending it at all. What I fought against was spending money that would have put the future of the club in danger. If we find the right player, we will do it. Without any doubt.
“There is a huge difference between the perception people have of me and reality. I am not scared to spend money. If you go out with me one night, you will understand.
Arsenal have spent nearly £80 million combined on the transfers of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez during the last two summers, but have recouped significantly more than that number in recent years by selling the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri, Robin Van Persie, Alex Song and Thomas Vermaelen.
