Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, the Vice-President-elect, on Wednesday said God had done an awesome thing in giving his party, the All Progressives Congress, victory in the presidential election.
Osinbajo’s selection as vice-presidential candidate is seen as one of the master strokes that delivered the South West votes to APC.
Osinbajo ran on a joint ticket with retired General Muhammadu Buhari.
In all Buhari’s three previous attempts he never carried South West.
The erudite law professor spoke from Abuja in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.
“I am very happy. God has done an awesome thing,” Osinbajo told NAN when asked about his feelings on the outcome of the election. He is a senior pastor in The Redeemed Christian Church of God.
The nation’s electoral body, the Independent National electoral Commission, had, on Wednesday, declared Buhari winner of the March 28 presidential election, in which he beat other contestants, including President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Osinbajo expressed appreciation to all Nigerians for their votes which, he said, gave APC victory in the presidential election. He reiterated the party’s promise to make life better for the average Nigerian.
He said: “We already have a manifesto which clearly says that we are determined to change this country and turn the direction of the country around. “Our promise is to work every single day, determined to make life better for the average Nigerian.”
Osinbajo said the electoral process, by and large, had proved to be quite versatile. He said: “I think it was flexible enough to accommodate a lot of the issues and problems that came up. “Of course, there is a long way to go in getting the system to work perfectly.”
On President Jonathan’s action of conceding defeat, Osinbajo said it was commendable. NAN reports that President Jonathan, ahead of the official declaration of Buhari as winner, had called him on phone to congratulate him and wish him the best. Osinbajo said the President, by his action, demonstrated tremendous maturity and decency.
He said: “”I think that will set an example, which would perhaps provide some kind of guide to others as to what to do in situations such like that. “I think he provided a good example as to what to do when obviously you find out that you lost an election. “The right thing to do is to congratulate the victor and I think the President did the right thing.”
