In a statement read out in Beira, Simango described the elections as “full of irregularities and violence.”
While, observers from southern African regional bloc, African Union (AU), European Union (EU), the Commonwealth and the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) on Friday all made their preliminary observations, declaring Mozambique’s general elections generally peaceful, well-conducted and credible.
On Friday night, reacting to Simango’s statement, the spokesperson of the National Elections Commission (CNE), Paulo Cuinica, told journalists that the delays in accreditation were exclusively the fault of the political parties themselves who, under the electoral law, should have delivered the name of all the monitors at least 20 days before polling day.
Furthermore, Antonio Muchanga, the spokesperson for the main opposition Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama, was reported to have cited a string of election problems and irregularities at a Thursday press conference.
Partial results of the polls show that candidate of the ruling Frelimo party, Filipe Nyusi achieved more than 60 percent of the vote, the Renamo leader snatched more than 30 percent, while the MDM leader has 7 percent.
