Senate President David Mark has disclosed that the Senate will screen the newly nominated Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Mahmud Mohammed on Tuesday next week.
Speaking at yesterday’s plenary, Senator Mark urged his colleagues to avail themselves during the screening exercise which will hold in the Senate chamber.
President Goodluck Jonathan had on Wednesday submitted the name of Justice Mohammed of the Supreme Court for confirmation as the new CJN.
In a letter addressed to Senate President Mark dated November 10, 2014, Jonathan said the nomination was in consonance with the provisions of section 231 (1) of the 1999 constitution.
Jonathan said the section gives him the power to appoint the CJN acting on recommendation of the National Judicial Council and subject to confirmation by the Senate.
Justice Mohammed will replace the outgoing CJN Justice Mariam Aloma Mukhtar who is retiring soon.
