The House of Representatives, on Thursday, tasked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on the need to step up surveillance and patrol aimed at checking incessant armed robbery incidents along the Abuja-Kano expressway.
The House took the resolution following a motion under matters of urgent public importance moved by Ali Madaki, who drew attention of lawmakers to what he termed, “an incessant armed robbery attack by hoodlums along the Kaduna-Kano axis of the highway”.
Accroding to him, “the robbery attacks have gradually grounded economic activities on the affected axis of the road”.
Calling government’s attention to its responsibility of safeguarding the lives and property of citizens, the Kano-borne lawmaker quoted Section 14 sub-section 2 Paragraph B of the constitution, saying “the Nigerian Constitution, Section 14 (2) (b) states clearly that the primary purpose of government is the security and welfare of the people.
“But what is happening now, especially when you leave Kaduna, you find bad people hanging at different corners of the road. They would stop you, snatch your vehicle or properties, and they will disappear out of sight.
“A member of this House, I won’t mention his name, was recently attacked and his belongings taken away.”
Another person also got robbed and slapped by these dear-devils,” he said.
Deputy Speaker, Emeka Ihedioha, who presided over the plenary, ruled that the motion be appropriately referred to the Committee on Police Affairs as stated in the prayer. The committee is expected to report back to the House in two weeks
