On this day in 1997, my mentor and hero of Nigeria’s democracy, Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, died in Abakiliki prison.
Tafida gave his life for the cause of democracy. He taught me to fight for Nigeria, even if I had to go alone. He was my personal hero.
I remember when I was under great pressure to support constitutional changes to elongate our tenure. Tafida’s words gave me courage to fight.
…
By virtue of his birth and position, Tafida could have chosen to be a elite/sectional politician, but he chose to be a nationalist.
Tafida was the first to build a political party with people from all over Nigeria, a departure from the practice of regional politics.
My unwavering belief in democracy and one Nigeria was strengthened by the time I spent working with Shehu Musa Yar’Adua.
