The moment Disney Channel announced they were making a That’s So Raven spinoff called Raven’s Home, fans of the original show knew it was going to be amazing. Simply put: Raven-Symoné + Disney Channel = automatic success.
A show about recently divorced Raven and Chelsea moving in together to raise their kids together under one roof already sounds like your new favorite show. But there’s one thing that will break your heart about the show: Raven Baxter’s ex-husband and father to her children, Booker and Nia, is her high school love, Devon – which means Raven and Devon got married after high school and then divorced! LOVE IS DEAD! *sob*
Seventeen.com got the chance to chat with Raven and she revealed to us why she chose to have Raven and Devon get married just to have them breakup.
“I was a part of that decision to have Devon as Raven’s ex-husband,” Raven-Symoné dished. “Everyone was torn with the decision – who should it be? I’ve always found Raven’s relationship with Devon interesting. And like, how about a little bit of nostalgia?”
THEN WHY DID THEY DIVORCE?!
“They were high school sweethearts, but things change. People marry their high school sweethearts and then they grow up and things change and they get divorced and things are good because there’s still friendship there,” Raven explained.
Apparently, Raven wanted to shed light on a different type of parental unit in Raven’s Home: Parents that choose NOT to be together because it’s better for their family. “There are so many types of divorces portrayed on TV but we wanted to go the route of you can have a happy divorce. We’re friends! He’s a very involved dad, and we get along. I’m sure we’ve had our issues in the past but for the kids, our issues are in the past.”
Navia Robinson, who plays Raven and Devon’s daughter Nia, also opened up to us about her character’s relationship with Devon. “Nia has an awesome relationship with both of her parents. When something happens in her life or she needs someone to talk to she goes straight to her dad. Which I do in real life.”
Fans can take comfort in knowing that while Raven and Devon aren’t romantically involved anymore, they still have love for one another. “There’s still a good relationship there,” Raven-Symoné insisted. “There’s friendship. It didn’t work romantically. Hopefully fans of raven will enjoy just as much as I enjoy playing it.”
Raven’s Home premieres tomorrow on Disney Channel at 10pm, right after Descendants 2!
