A pro-democracy pressure group, Centre for Transparent and Credible Election (CTCE), has called on the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, to ensure that the forthcoming 2015 general elections do not experience the kind of flaws witnessed during the distribution of the Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs).
The group while reacting to how INEC handled the issuance of the PVCs in Lagos State, described the exercise as “shoddy and untidy” and thereby urged Jega to put his house in order so as not to create the impression that he was out to disenfranchise voters in the state.
In a statement signed issued in Lagos by its National Co-ordinator, Wale Adeyemi, on Tuesday, the group complained that the exercise was fraught with a lot of irregularities such as “duplication of names, missing names, misspelt names, inadequate materials as well as muddling up of identities.”
The group also called on the INEC boss to look into the complaints lodged by the Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, about the alleged reduction of over a million names on the voters register.
The statement quoted the group as saying that “we will vehemently resist any attempt by any agent to undermine the right of Lagos electorate.”
While urging Jega to nudge his commission towards doing the right things, CTCE reminded him that, “Nigerians, most especially, the people of Lagos State, expect nothing less than free, fair, credible and transparent elections in 2015. Therefore, your commission should buckle up and do the needful,” the statement added.
