As always, the retained and released lists may be official (as of May 21 at least), but most contracts actually run through the end of June, so the players who are on the released list are still technically Chelsea players until June 30. Plus, any player released could always come back on a new contract, or, as in the case of Hilario two years ago, a new role.
It’s actually a very light released list from the club with the departures of loanees Pato and Falcao already handled separately. These lists concern themselves only with actual contracted players.
Released
Amelia, Marco
Musonda, Tika Kafusha
Wright, Kevin
Amelia had spoken of his desire to stay; I suspect if that were to happen, he’d stay in a coaching role in a transition similar to the one made by the aforementioned Hilario. Tika Musonda (older brother of Charly) and Kevin Wright were two of the more obscure prospects in the system. The former had already followed his brother down to Real Betis while the latter will look to catch in the lower divisions.Always a dependable and capable performer, there’ll be no shortage of interest in him. Had an impressive trial at Sheff Wed already
On the retained list, the good news are the contract offers to several players. We already knew about John Terry, but the club have finally moved to tender offers to Ola Aina and John Swift as well. Wingers Alex Kiwomya and Reece Mitchell have also received offers.
UPDATE: as pointed out in the comments, Mohamed Salah is only on the retained list. His situation remains … complicated … with Fiorentina appealing over his loan and Roma once claiming that they already signed him. Oh joy…
