The new leadership of the Labour Party in Ondo State has said that it has no plans to promote the candidacy of President Goodluck Jonathan, but is focused on repositioning the party to emerge victorious in the coming general elections.
It also said the new LP in Ondo State was no longer under the influence of Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who defected to the Peoples Democratic Party in October.
Acting Chairman of the party, Mr. Kolawole Johnson, while addressing journalists in Akure, said the party had been repositioned irrespective of the exit of Dr. Mimiko, noting that the party remained the party of the people of Ondo State.
He said although the party was noted for its support for Jonathan in the past, there was nothing in the current agenda of the party in the state to promote such.
He however added that it would be the decision of the party at the centre to decide to field a presidential candidate or not.
He said, “Our party is bigger than any individual because it is owned by the people and every contributor to our national purse with well articulated programmes that is centered on the people. This is the party of the masses built on sound democratic norms and best acceptable global practices.
“The reason for the short dull in activities in recent past in the state is to allow the party go through the necessary process of re-engineering and restructuring after the exit of the only governor on the platform.
“It gladdens our heart to inform you that the process is completed and it has produced a better platform that the people shall be proud of as you shall rightly testify as events unfold.
“Now, Labour Party is better repositioned to win elections in ondo state with clearer focus, better strategies and renewed vigour. Our confidence stems from the cardinal agenda of the party which is people oriented and national in outlook.”
Johnson further said that with the new LP and its leadership, its platform was now stronger and available for all party members.
According to him, the party will feature candidates for all the elective positions come 2015 and that it is confident of overwhelming victory.
