Former Minister of State, Industry, Trade and Investment, who had aspired to be governor on Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, platform in Benue State, Chief Dr Samuel Ortom has resigned his membership of the party.
He tendered his resignation letter to ward chairman of Nzorov in Guma Local Government Area, Felix Agbaka, JP.
Chief Dr Ortom expressed appreciation to the leadership of the party and members for what he described as their support and con…tributions to his upliftment over the years.
Speaking at a meeting with major stakeholders of his governorship project across the state at the Oracle Farms on the outskirts of Makurdi metropolis before his resignation, Chief Dr Ortom expressed appreciation to his supporters for what he described as their uncommon commitment, resilience, and doggedness to keep faith with the project inspite of overwhelming intimidation and determination from the powers that be to use all means to exclude him from the governorship primaries.
He said although it was common knowledge that the entire nomination process was fraught with injustice from the beginning when it was obvious that a decision was taken to deliberately disenfranchise the larger number of party members at the ward congresses he forged ahead with his aspiration within the party in the hope of getting protection which he was promised but eventually could not obtain from the state and national leadership.
According to the former Minister, although he had been advised on account of ominous signs to seek an alternative platform he chose to remain in the party in order not to abandon midstream those within it who nursed the forlorn expectation that reprieve could still be found within the system.
Chief Dr Ortom stated that although he had no personal grouse against the person who emerged as the candidate and the leaders of the party it was imperative to challenge the injustice that had been meted out with the obvious objective of subverting the determination of the generality of the Benue people to elect him as their Governor in 2015.
He made reference to his campaign anthem which stated that “though the giants may be on the way to hinder, God will surely give us victory” pointing out that since the beginning of the race he had known that it would not be easy and appealed to supporters to brace up to overcome the challenges.
The former Minister maintained that having exhausted every opportunity within the PDP it was imperative to utilize an alternative platform hence the need to consult with the stakeholders.
Those who spoke advised that the alternatives available be carefully and quickly analyzed and the best option chosen as soon as possible.
He said he would give further information about the platform soon.
