The Peoples Democratic Party has made light the resignation of former President Olusegun Obasanjo from the party, saying it lacks any electoral value.
The party sees the departure of the former president as a welcome development, saying that he had been creating issues for the party.
Obasanjo had on Monday morning in an almost a childish display of grievance caused to be torn to shreds his membership card for the party under which he ruled the country for eight years.
A prominent PDP memeber who did not want his name in print, said that what the former president did was sacrilegious.
According to him, no matter what is his grievances it was the height of ingra.titude for a man who literarily picked from the prison to be made president to so treat the party that gave him the platform.
He said that he has been working openly for the opposition All Progressive Congress (APC), adding that his departure would have not electoral impact on the party.
The Chairman of the Ogun State chapter of the party, Chief Adebayo Dayo, who spoke while announcing the expulsion of Obasanjo from the party on Monday, said the former president had been a burden to the PDP.
Dayo said based on correspondence from Obasanjo’s ward, the PDP had since last week Thursday suspended the former president for alleged anti-party activities.
Dayo said the activities and utterances of Obasanjo were unbecoming of “a highly celebrated party man”.
He said the PDP would not miss the exit of the former president, whom he described as “lacking electoral value”.
He said though the PDP leadership had been managing Obasanjo over the years, the party was constrained to sanction him because of his “numerous anti-party activities and uncomplimentary utterances targeted at the leader of the party, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan”.
Dayo also disowned Alhaji Usman Oladunjoye as the PDP chairman in Obasanjo’s ward.
He said Oladunjoye had long defected to the All Progressives Congress.
The party chairman stated that one Yusuf Olaleye remained the ward 11 chairman in Abeokuta North Local Government Area.
He said: “Following series of unabated anti-party activities unbecoming of a highly celebrated party man engaged in by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the totality of the executive, leaders and members of the Peoples Democratic Party family in Ogun State hereby state categorically as from today Monday 16th of February 2015 (that) Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo stands expelled and excommunicated from the party thereby losing all rights, previous privileges and respect of our teeming party members.
“The general public, especially the media, are to take note that whatever Obasanjo does or say must no longer be seen from the prism of a PDP leader.
“Indeed he seems to have lost all sense of proper behaviour expected of a man who previously used and abused the opportunity provided him by the PDP.
“His ward 11 Abeokuta North local government has earlier sent in letter dated 12th February 2015 expressing serious concerns at his numerous anti-party activities and uncomplimentary utterances targeted at the leader of the party, President Ebele Jonathan.
“It is ironic that this is the same Obasanjo who when he was president never tolerated nor accepted any opinion, suggestion or criticism of his tenure.
“Members of the public, zonal organs of our party and the National Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party are to take note.”
