The harmonisation of amendments of the 1999 Constitution, in which the National Assembly has proposed the scrapping of the State Joint Local Government Account, has pitted the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) against the Federal Government.
NUT has threatened that it would ground the basic education sub-sector with an indefinite strike, if the National Assembly goes ahead with the bill for an Act to further alter the provisions of the 1999 Constitution that could grant full autonomy to the 774 local government areas in the country.
The State Joint Local Government Account is an account run by the state governments and local government authorities, where the funds for the payment of basic schoolteachers is domiciled.
President of the NUT, Michael Olukoya, handed down the warning of an industrial action on Wednesday, shortly after members of the union rose from an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja
