The Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yenagoa Branch, Tony Okorodas, has urged the Federal Government to show transparency in subsequent award of National Honours.
Okorodas said in an interview on Thursday in Yenagoa, that the ordinary Nigerian knows little or nothing about the process of nomination and selection of recipients.
He called for public enlightenment to afford the ordinary people the opportunity “to nominate the unsung heroes of our times.”
He equally observed that the list was dominated by the elite class, especially politicians and high-ranking public officers “because they deserve it having served the nation in various capacities”.
Okorodas also contended that more ordinary citizens should be conferred with the National Honours.
“We have the dedicated teacher, the honest hotel cleaner, the lawyer handling lots of pro bono criminal cases. The Honours should represent honesty, a sense of duty and patriotism,” the NBA boss said.
