Following earlier resistance put forward by the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party in Ondo State against Governor Olusegun Mimiko’s planned takeover of the party structure, the governor has begun moves to resolve the impasse.
As soon as Mimiko announced his defection from the Labour Party to the PDP, the latter had gone to court to stop any attempt to dissolve the state working committee and to deter the national working committee of the party from imposing a fresh one in favour of Mimiko.
Some of the party loyalists had also threatened to dump the PDP for other political parties, should Mimiko be allowed to erode the efforts they had made to build the party as well as truncate their interests.
Our correspondent however gathered that a crucial meeting between Mimiko and party members was held in Akure on Thursday and witnessed intense negotiations.
A source close to the PDP in the state said Mimiko had to allay the fears of the old members of the party that he was not coming in to truncate the current structure of the party.
He said, “All members and major stakeholders in the party were present, except a PDP governorship candidate in the last election, Olusola Oke, and businessman, Jimoh Ibrahim.”
