John Obi Mikel, Nigerian international and Chelsea midfielder got his first UEFA Champions League goal for his club, Chelsea.
Mikel had only scored four goals in the league and Cup competitions in England Since joining the London club, but the midfielder netted in the 56th minute in Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Sporting Lisbon at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
Mikel started the match alongside Serbian midfielder, Nemanja Matic, who has been the reason the Nigerian has seen limited action with the Blues.
Cesc Fabregas and Andre Schurrle gave Chelsea a two-goal lead inside the opening 16 minutes before Paulo Oliveira halved the Blues’ lead five minutes into the second half.
Mikel’s goal, which is rarity, produced a chorus of ‘John Obi Mikel, he scores when he wants’ from Stamford Bridge faithful.
The goal was Mikel’s fifth since he joined Chelsea in 2006.
Mikel has 109 minutes of Uefa Champions League football under his belt after playing in two matches in the competition for Chelsea this season and scoring once.
