On Monday, the Electoral College will meet to cast their ballots for the United States’ next president. Joe Biden is expected to receive 306 electoral votes, more than the 270 needed to be elected president.
Michigan electors, of which there are 16, will meet in their state capitol to formally cast their votes.
Due to the risk of violent protests, they will be accompanied by law enforcement officers.
This is in response to reports that a pro-Trump group plans to protest the results on Monday, according to the website Patch.
‘Stop the Steal,’ a right-wing group of conspiracists who claim the election was rigged, have announced they will demonstrate outside the Michigan Capitol throughout Monday.
The group made headlines on Saturday night when they surrounded the home of the state’s top election official.
Armed protesters, who dispute the November election results, protested outside of the house of Michigan’s secretary of state, Jocelyn Benson.
The group shouted conspiracy theories before police were called, according to the Independent.
Since Michigan is an ‘open carry’ state, meaning that it is lawful for a citizen to carry a gun in public, Monday’s protests could involve protesters carrying firearms.
This wouldn’t be the first time that armed right-wing protesters have approached the Michigan Capitol.
In May, hundreds of armed protesters descended on the building in protest of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s extension of the stay-at-home order.
Last month, it was revealed that there was a plot to burn down the state capitol and kidnap Whitmer.
Since November, Michigan has been a focal point for Trump allies seeking to overturn the election results.
Their efforts have been unsuccessful. Michigan certified the results of the election at the end of November. Biden won the state with a 154,000 vote majority.
On Friday, a last-ditch attempt to recount the votes was stopped in its tracks after the state’s Supreme Court declined to hear a Republican election fraud lawsuit.
