Pope Francis’s touch down in Washington, D.C. may have been the biggest thing in the news Tuesday evening, but personally, I couldn’t take my eyes off off Michelle Obama, and the flaw-free outfit she’d chosen to wear for the highly photo-documented occasion.
To greet the Pope at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, Obama, joined by her husband, Barack, and daughters, Malia and Sasha, dressed as appropriately and as lovely as we’ve come to expect. Her dress, by devout Catholic designer Carolina Herrera, was a baby blue, fit-and-flare, wool crepe number, with short sleeves, a ‘60s-esque high cowl neck, and matching skinny belt. (A similar version, here, retails for $2,290—so, maybe an even more appropriate option, as far as this pope is concerned, anyway, would’ve been something a bit more affordable!)
She accessorized with metallic silver pumps, easy waves, and matching powder blue nail polish.

Both Sasha, 14, and Malia Obama, 17, kept things conservative yet cute in black tops and midi-skirts. Sasha’s, a pleated, pastel colorblock version, is by Kate Spade. (Fun fact: Sasha’s real first name is actually Natasha! Mind = blown.)

As for the men, President Obama wore a sharply tailored, dark navy suit and blue tie to meet Francis, while the Pope stuck with his trusty white cassock, pellegrina, fascia, and pectoral cross—plus, as WWD reports, a Swatch watch on his wrist. If you notice his zucchetto is missing, it was probably a preventative measure: Candid photos from days prior show the skullcap being airlifted off of His Holiness’s head as he exits his plane.
