A candidate for the Mississippi state legislature fatally shot his estranged wife and then killed himself this week after being served with divorce papers, authorities said.
Carl Robinson, who was set to appear on a Democratic primary ballot next month, killed the woman Tuesday morning at a Potts Camp medical clinic where she was a receptionist, Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson told reporters.
The sheriff said the man had just received divorce papers from Latoya Thompson.
The woman’s co-workers tried to save her, but she died as emergency personnel were bringing her to a helicopter to take her to a hospital, Dickerson said.
Robinson was the executive director of the Commission on Aging and was running for the 5th district of the Mississippi House of Representatives.Thompson’s brother, Kevin, described his sister as “the baby of the family.”
“She was the one who was always smiling,” he told CBS affiliate station WREG-TV. “The dimples were as pretty and as deep as ever. She was the family songbird. She was the one who kind of kept us going.”
